Petra Loewen

Education Outreach Program Coordinator

Petra is from North Vancouver and has always lived close to the mountains, which made spending time outdoors a huge part of her life from an early age. Growing up, she spent her time hiking local trails, skiing in the winters, and regularly visiting coastal places like Tofino, where she explored tide pools and wandered through coastal rainforests. Her love for both mountain and marine environments sparked a strong interest in ecosystems and the species that live within them.

She recently graduated from the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation diploma program at BCIT, where she gained hands-on experience with fish tagging, benthic invertebrate sampling, and both plant and animal identification. The program deepened her understanding of ecological systems and gave her practical skills in environmental monitoring and fieldwork. Petra will be continuing her education this fall in BCIT’s Ecological Restoration program, where she’s excited to learn more about habitat restoration, land stewardship, and how to support resilient ecosystems, especially as they face increasing pressures from climate change.

Outside of school, Petra enjoys backpacking, hiking, skiing, and sketching wildlife and native plants. She’s especially passionate about mountainous landscapes and loves spending time in these places—whether she’s working, exploring, or just reading by a nice stream. Her passions lie in conservation and ecological research, and she’s excited to be part of the work Raincoast Education Society is doing to protect and connect people to the natural world.
