Raincoast Field School is an outdoor education program designed to meet BC curricular outcomes while providing hands-on learning opportunities for students in our local public schools. It is a collaborative program developed by the Raincoast Education Society (RES) and the teachers at the Tofino and Ucluelet elementary schools. Field trips and activities are led by a qualified full-time instructor with extensive experience as a science educator, and encompass multiple aspects of curricular outcomes including science, numeracy and literacy. Many outings also feature traditional Aboriginal knowledge provided by a First Nations Cultural Educator. The program is constantly evolving, with lessons being built or recycled to best fit with the unique themes of each class as determined by the teacher.
Every spring break & summer, we offer a broad range of camps to engage local and visiting children and youth. Our summer camps offer fun, activity-based learning opportunities focused on the rich marine and rainforest ecosystems of the region. Summer is a time of plenty and our camps provide youth with excellent opportunities to understand the natural abundance of the region, from salmon to whales to berries and more.
The Raincoast Education Society works with visiting elementary and secondary schools to provide hands-on, field-based programs in Clayoquot and Barkley Sound. Our school programs offer unique and immersive learning opportunities to connect youth with the rich environmental and cultural identity of the region and build a life-long appreciation and respect for the natural world.
The Uuqmis Tla-o-qui-aht Language and Culture Youth Program prepares young people to take care of each other and to take care of the land through experiences with community members and through the teachings of the Canoe, to develop a strong sense of Tla-o-qui-aht identity.
