Conservation Status of Marine Mammals of BC: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

with Dr. John K.B. Ford

The ocean waters of British Columbia have a remarkable diversity of marine mammals  31 species have been recorded here, this is one-quarter of all marine mammal species in the world! After co-existing with coastal First Nations Peoples for millennia, many marine mammals were driven to near extinction by uncontrolled exploitation following the arrival of Europeans. In this illustrated lecture, Dr. John Ford will provide an overview of the natural history of marine mammals of BC and describe their past exploitation and conservation status today.
