Raincoast Field School @ home

“To provide online nature-based learning opportunities for local students.”

Raincoast Field School @ home is an interactive online program delivered by Raincoast Field School instructors, educators and scientists. The program is being created to provide our local students (and beyond!) nature-based programming during COVID-19 related school closures.

Weekly ecology lessons are offered at 11 am PDT on Tuesday and Thursday, and can be joined from a computer, smartphone or tablet. Lessons will be best suited for families with children in Grades K-7. Links to supplementary materials and recorded videos will be posted on the lesson pages below.

Ms. Baas’s Grade 1 class always has a fun time on Field Schools and today was no exception! The class begun our day with a rainforest scavenger hunt, looking for signs of temperate rainforests and learning about the importance of moisture and sunlight for a temperate rainforest! We learned about certain quintessential temperate rainforest plants such as salal and electrical cattail moss! While noticing how much the weather changes in Tofino, the class also had so much fun making our own rainstorm with our hands and feet. We finished our morning by receiving our very own Temperate Rainforest booklets and drawing one of the popular rainforest species in each of our own booklets to save for and reference later! The class hopes to have just as much fun on our next field school to the landfill!

Thank you all for your donations! Our Double your Dollars campaign was a success.
We were able to raise a total of $24,819.21 before matching. With matching funds from @longbeachlodgeresort and two generous community members we now have $49,638.42 for the 2020/21 year of Raincoast Field School.

We launched the fundraiser in hopes of securing enough funding to keep year-round programs like Field School up and running. Field School delivers about 200 field trips per year to students at Wickaninnish Community School in Tofino and UES in Ucluelet. We run about 200 field trips per year, which means each and every student K-7 gets about 10 trips per year. These trips focus on delivering elements of the BC science curriculum in a hands-on, outdoor setting, helping promote community connections and environmental stewardship.

The funds raised make up about half the yearly budget for Field School and we feel that with additional ongoing community support we can continue to deliver the program year round!

Thank you to @clayoquotbiospheretrust,
we gratefully acknowledge Clayoquot Biosphere Trust’s support of this campaign, our long-time partner in sustainability education in the Biosphere Region. Their donor network was instrumental in the campaigns success. The CBT also administered this matching campaign so that the RES receives 100% of donations with no overhead or transaction fees.
